The Coals – A Song

fire-1712742_1280

he was cold, but warm

he was everything i didn’t want

and i found myself searching

for the light in his grin

he was blunt, but true

nothing that he ever said was blue

and i found myself digging

in the coals of his soul

we had a whole train

of could-have-beens

i didn’t know then

how much he would mean

to me

i was strong but weak

i was everything we couldn’t see

but he found himself staring

through the cracks, right at me

i was smart, but dense

nothing that i ever feared made sense

but he found himself breaking

all my walls of pretense

we had a whole train

of could-have-beens

i didn’t know then

how much i could mean

to him

we moved on too fast

not that i ever thought it would last

but i found myself stumbling

in the coals of my soul

Obviously I’m not a professional songwriter, so this probably sucks, but putting those words on the page felt pretty good.

I started writing this for a book I’m working on (the main character, Loreen, was humming this song she’d written for a guy, Heath, with the intention of never ever letting him know because feelings need to be left caged in, right, guys? ahem).

But I couldn’t help getting personal through the lines cause I can relate with my character on this subject. So there you have it.

Feelings, or whatever they’re called.

In a song.

On the page.

For everybody to read.

Bye.
