Hi folks!
As you may know, my book Devonna is coming out in October and I thought I’d share a little bit about how the publishing process is going so far in my journey. What the publishing house (Evernight Teen) required of me and stuff like that.
I just figured this is the kind of post I would’ve liked to read a couple of months back to know what to expect, because right now I live in a bubble of unexpected emails and requests and it is MAKING ME REALLY ANXIOUS.
But somehow, I manage. (Because I must manage.) (And, yes, this is a The Office reference because The Office is life.)
So here goes!
Note that Evernight publishes only ebooks and Print-on-Demands, so the process is probably a lot different than with physical books (especially schedule-wise, I think). But you’ll still need to do all the things below. So be prepared, folks.
ONE: Cover Sheet and Bio
The first things I was asked to send (literally the moment the book got accepted) was my bio (obviously you should have one ready at this stage) and the cover sheet. That was new for me. It’s basically a bunch of info to give about the book that the designers will use to create the cover design.
I don’t have my cover yet.
I don’t have tips for how to give the right information or stuff like that. (But once I have the official cover, let me know if you’d like a post on the topic!)
But I have a coming-soon pic and that’s pretty sweet I think!
TWO: Welcome Pack
Weeks passed and I tried not to die in anticipation. Then I received an awesome welcome pack from the house with a bunch of info on who to communicate to if I have marketing or editing questions or stuff like that. It’s a busy world and you don’t want to be bothering the wrong pal.
The pack also mentioned what was expected of me in the marketing of my book a.k.a the part of the process most writers hope will never fall on them because why not magic instead? And then it came:
THREE: HI DON’T PANIC YOUR FIRST EDIT IS HERE
Obviously panic happened.
It sure did.
Panic was the theme of that week. And the first time I read the edited manuscript I was an outraged ball of NO WAY, JOSÉ, but then I calmed down and realized it wasn’t that bad.
It was mostly small typos and details concerning the house’s stylistic preferences.
And it was all to make my book better. Isn’t that cool?
FOUR: Edit #2, Teaser Excerpt, Dedication
That’s where I’m at.
Couple of days back I received the second round of edits (mostly stuff that we were agreeing on from the first round, and then yet more typos Ha-Ha-Ha, fun!) And then I was asked to pick a teaser excerpt for the book. (Exciting!)
And to write the dedication.
And oh my god.
I never expected the dedication to cause me so much stress. I CAN’T BELIEVE I HADN’T THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE.
So that’s it for me!
Was this post useful to you? Are you working on publishing traditionally?
Or are you getting published and having a really different journey?
Is there a part of the process you’d like for me to talk about in more details in another post?
Let me know in the comments!
I’m so excited to read Devonna!! I can’t wait! 😀

Dear Audrey,
Following you all this years, I am so proud to see you becoming the promising author you always were for us on audreywritesabroad.
I am wondering which part was the most challenging for you. Of course the first edit, but after that ?

Aww! Thank you so much, that means a lot to me! I think so far, the most difficult part for me is to build a marketing routine and to stay motivated to keep it up, haha. Like a lot of authors, it’s not my favorite part!

Awww thank you, Marica 😀
Trust me, I’m handling this like a debut author who doesn’t really know what’s going on XD
