10 Reasons Why The Raven Cycle is Awesome

I recently (last night) finished the amazing series that is The Raven Cycle, and I have to say, I wasn’t completely in love when I finished reading the first book, especially because that last line really confused me, (and yet now that I’ve read the whole thing I absolutely ADORE that last line).

I became more and more in love with the books as I read and at the end I swear to you I was talking and screaming at the characters TO BE CAREFUL AND DON’T GO IN THERE ON YOUR OWN GANSEY MY BABY because that’s how much I care, now. There is no going back.

And if that doesn’t convince you to pick up this series already, here’s 10 reasons why it’s absolutely awesome.

Michael Scott kindly dancing to introduce my post

ONE: The writing style

Maggie Stiefvater has her very own way to write and it’s like nothing else I’ve read in my entire life. (And I read a lot, folks.)

“When Gansey was polite, it made him powerful. When Adam was polite, he was giving power away.”

The Raven Boys

TWO: The characters

Not only I fell in love with each and every one of them, but I absolutely ADORED the way they interacted with each other. I loved how Gansey was looking out for the group, how Ronan was a cinnamon roll under all his layers of badass, how Adam & Blue’s friendship was awkward and complicated and lovely. The whole thing was absolutely REAL and BEAUTIFUL and that is a

THREE: Foreshadowing

I’m not kidding, folks. The foreshadowing is absolutely Harry Potter Level of EPIC in this series. And I will definitely have to reread the whole thing to appreciate it properly because I’m sure there’s a LOT of details I missed.

“If I were a tree, I would have no reason to love a human.”

The Raven Boys

FOUR: Feels get more intense with every book

I mean it. By the end of the series, I was having PANIC ATTACKS (or something very close) at the idea of something bad happening to my Gansey. (As you may have noticed, I’m slightly obsessed with the perfection that is Richard Gansey the Third.) And it’s really because Stiefvater is a magician and a genius when it comes to the backstory and actions of her characters. Whether you want it or not, YOU WILL LOVE THEM. (Especially my baby Gansey Boy.)

love him so much

I had to interrupt my reading approximately one thousand three hundred and seventy-two times in order to admire a turn of phrase and a TRUTH about life and love and friendship or anything really, that the author had find a way to convey absolutely perfectly.

He felt a sudden urge to save all these other Adams hidden in plain view, though he didn’t know if they would listen to him. It struck him as a Gansey or a Blue impulse, and as he held that tiny, heroic spark in his mind, he realized that it was only because he believed that he had saved himself that he could imagine saving someone else.

The Raven King

SIX: The magic

The magic is real in this series. And it’s absolutely original and awesome. Ghosts, curses, fortune tellers, wishes from dead Welsh kings, and an entire creepy forest straight out of a dream. It just won’t stop surprising you.

SEVEN: Richard Gansey the III

I know.

EIGHT: 300 Fox Way

Every scene that happened at 300 Fox Way was always absolutely random and original and hilarious. I mean, who wants to grow up in a huge, old house with a bunch of crazy psychic aunts?

NINE: The covers are gorgeous

Yep. Covers make books cooler and that’s another FACT. And I mean, look at these!

TEN: Did I mention Gansey?

Are you sure?

And that’s it for me!

Have you read this series? What did you like about it?

If not, is it on your TBR? What’s your current read, guys?

  1. I wholeheartedly agree with everything mentioned here! I have yet to find any other book like these, any other author like her. I don’t get when people say she’s overrated – erm, have you even read her books, folks? Yes, she’s not the nicest person on the planet (allegedly) but one cannot deny her humongous talent.
